The Stiffe Caves
The Stiffe Caves are, technically speaking, a resurgence i.e. the point where a river comes up to the surface after having flown underground; in this case, that point is exactly the highest point of the gorge dominating the small village of Stiffe.
Stiffe is a suburb of San Demetrio ne' Vestini, a town in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo (Italy).
The presence of a river that in some periods of the year can have a remarkable flow rate is the main characteristic of these caves. For this reason, the caves are sometimes crossed just by a murmuring and whispering brook , sometimes by a river rushing down the valley with a thunderous roar through rapids and waterfalls.
